PESD study assesses cookstove business models in India

A PESD study just released in Energy Policy found that stove businesses are challenging but feasible with deep financial backing and managerial acumen. However, such businesses struggle to make a serious dent in the household-level indoor air pollution problem that motivated many to pursue improved biomass stoves in the first place. Read more »

Video: Morse Led the SLAC Colloquium on Coal Renaissance in a Post-Kyoto World

On Monday, June 13, 2011, as part of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's colloquium series, Richard Morse from the Program on Energy on Sustainable Development led the talk on “Addressing the ‘Coal Renaissance’ in a Post-Kyoto World.” Morse discussed the outlook for global carbon policy, how international coal markets are evolving, and what strategies and technologies might realistically be used to reduce emissions from coal. This Included discussions on the latest developments in Europe, China, and the US in carbon policy, and an analysis of international coal markets highlighting key issues for the future of Chinese energy consumption.

PESD paper helps frame conference session on Asian natural gas

PESD Associate Director Mark Thurber and Research Associate Joseph Chang wrote "The Policy Tightrope in Gas-Producing Countries: Stimulating Domestic Demand Without Discouraging Supply" that helped frame the discussion at the 2011 Pacific Energy Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia. The study explores and assesses the policy options that gas-rich governments can use to develop domestic gas markets, with a focus on major Asian gas-producing countries.

New PESD Working Paper details challenges of designing carbon offsets for the transportation sector

Announcement

Programs to enlist developing countries in climate change mitigation by granting credits for carbon emissions reductions across entire sectors like transportation are quite appealing in principle. However, as researcher Adam Millard-Ball shows in PESD Working Paper #97, "Adverse Selection in an Opt-In Emissions Trading Program: The Case of Sectoral Crediting for Transportation," any practical implementation of such schemes would entail thorny trade offs between economic efficiency, environmental effectiveness, and political acceptability.
