in the news: Bloomberg News on April 16, 2012PESD associate director Mark Thurber argues in Bloomberg News that Argentina’s government should not expect a near-term boost in domestic fuel production from its planned re-nationalization of oil company YPF, which is majority-owned by Spain’s Repsol. Even over the longer term, national oil companies are not always effective instruments for serving government goals like increased domestic production. The timing is especially sensitive given the nascent development of Argentina’s massive unconventional hydrocarbon resources. Read more »

NYU Journal of International Law & Politics publishes PESD study results
Erik Woodhouse publishes the final report from PESD's multi-year study on privately owned power plants in emerging markets. The study, appearing in the next issue of the New York University Journal of International Law & Politics, explains the wide variation in experiences as foreign investors have built and operated overseas power plants.

Oil is trading at record high prices because demand keeps rising even as supplies become unreliable. Oil exporters from Iran to Russia and Venezuela are using their petrocash to pursue agendas that undercut western security and interests. Supplies of natural gas also seem less secure than ever. United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs reports on energy
The United Nations has published David Victor's report, "The Effects of Power Sector Reform on Energy Services for the Poor," via their Division for Sustainable Development.
