Richard's leads PESD's work on global coal markets. PESD's coal research examines the political economy of coal and coal's long term role in the world's energy mix. Other research interests include carbon policy and carbon markets, renewable energy markets, and financial markets for energy commodities.
Richard received a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Rice University, where he was awarded the James Street Fulton Prize for the top graduate in the field. He has worked in commodities markets for oil, natural gas, renewable energy, and emissions. Richard has also been a long-time radio DJ of rare soul music.
