Emmerson on methodology in Southeast Asian studies

In his closing keynote address at the Methodology in Southeast Asian Studies conference held May 29 to 31 at the University of Freiburg, Donald Emmerson spoke of the need to embrace a diversity of research methods in the field of Southeast Asian studies. He described the contrast—including the epistemological tension—between quantitative and qualitative research methods and ways of knowing.
