CDDRL honor student recognized for contributions to undergraduate education

Holly Fetter, an undergraduate senior honors student at the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) received the Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel Award for her outstanding contributions to undergraduate education at Stanford University. Fetter is a senior in comparative studies in race and ethnicity and is a co-terminal master's degree candidate in sociology.

Fetter was one of two graduating seniors honored with the award, which cited "her effectiveness as an educator – teaching students how to build community, to learn from differences, to overcome challenges and to be a dedicated ally."

She was also noted "her grace, empathy and compassion – and for inspiring others to work to improve the Stanford experience."

Her contributions to student life include the active leadership roles she played in several student organizations on campus, including:  Stanford STATIC, the First-Generation, Low-Income Partnership and the Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) Community Action Board.

The ASSU Action Board, which is chaired by Fetter, received the 2013 President’s Award for Excellence Through Diversity for the organization's leadership and effort to build bridges across the diverse communities at Stanford. Fetter, along with another student leader, accepted the award on behalf of the organization.

Fetter wrote her undergraduate honors thesis on the consequences of U.S. funding for Chinese civil society after conducting original in-country research last summer. Her thesis advisor was Jean Oi, the William Haas Professor in Chinese Politics in the department of political science and a senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute.

Past Dinkelspiel Award recipients include CDDRL Director Larry Diamond and 2011-12 honors student, Otis Reid. Fetter will be presented with the Dinkelspiel Award on Sunday, June 16 at the Stanford Commencement ceremony.
